Regional development North Forest (ongoing)
The northern forest in Austria is characterized by large, contiguous forest areas that extend beyond the borders of Upper Austria into the Czech Republic and Lower Austria, with which they are closely functionally interconnected. Since the early 1990s, an increased presence of the lynx, a species strictly protected under EU law, has been observed. The partially transboundary raised bogs, fens, and transitional mires, as well as the rivers Schwarze Aist, Weiße Aist, and Maltsch, contribute further significant structural features to the area and represent essential elements of ecological value and connectivity. The presence of various protected grouse species is also of great value to this region.
As part of a study, we are analyzing how the most important ecological features of this area can be better preserved and further developed, while simultaneously increasing the economic value of the attractive landscape, particularly in terms of tourism. Based on an assessment of the ecological and economic situation, as well as the societal framework, various nature conservation instruments for the protection and development of the valuable Nordwald area are described.
