Guide: Improving the practicality of management plans (2022)

Client: Office of the Styrian State Government, Nature Conservation Department

The users of a management plan are as diverse as the requirements and expectations they place on a management plan: area managers want guidance for their work plan, experts want details on the value of the area and its protected subjects as well as statements on the development of the stock, representatives of agricultural and forestry interests want to better understand the background to area protection so that they can better convey it in their consultations. The readability, comprehensibility and practical suitability of the management plan for a broad spectrum of users and readers is therefore of central importance. A "Guide for the preparation of management plans" created by Suske Consulting was intended to improve the practical suitability of future management plans for Natura 2000 areas in Styria. To do this, the guide starts on a formal level by specifying the structure and layout of the management plan or identifying text areas that can be formulated uniformly in all management plans. On a content level, important key points were worked out which need to be taken into account with regard to language in order to reach the individual target groups as effectively as possible. In addition, guidelines were formulated for the most important content components of a management plan, such as area description or conservation goals and measures, which ensure comprehensibility, completeness and clarity.
