Farmer-focused Biodiversity and Agricultural Knowledge Network (ongoing)

Client: Teagasc, Irish Authority for Agriculture and Food Development

The Farmer-focussed Biodiversity and agricultural knowledge Network (FarmBioNet) project was launched in January 2025. The project, led by Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, is funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.

The aim of FarmBioNet is to identify biodiversity-friendly farming practices and help farmers create habitats that provide food, security and protection for biodiversity on their farms.

Under the leadership of Suske Consulting, national networks for agriculture and biodiversity will be established in 13 countries, composed of farmers, foresters, researchers, NGOs, consultants and other relevant actors of the agricultural knowledge and innovation system (AKIS).

FarmBioNet will use these national networks to collect and spread knowledge and information.

The project aims to promote the dissemination of measures that benefit biodiversity on farms. A cost-benefit analysis will be carried out to show how biodiversity can benefit sustainable food production. In addition, practical decision-making tools will be developed for farmers, foresters and policy makers.

The three-year FarmBioNet project aims to enable farmers to better understand how biodiversity-friendly their farm is and what simple, cost-effective measures they can take to improve their entire farm for biodiversity without negatively impacting productivity.

"Every farm has the opportunity to significantly improve biodiversity without increasing costs. Farmers and scientists can work together to identify where these opportunities lie and take targeted action to use them," said Andrew Bergin, Farming for Nature Ambassador in Ireland and member of the Executive Committee.
