Result-based payments
International meeting in Vienna

The conference took place from 16.09.2019 to 17.09.2019 in Vienna and was organized and carried out by Suske Consulting, the association thema:natur and Jordbruks verket - Swedish Board of Agriculture. Host was the Federal Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism.

Result-based payment systems are increasingly used to encourage farmers to change their farming practices in order to protect natural habitats and the species they contain. In Europe, the number of these systems has grown steadily in recent decades. The result has been a variety of payment models that have now been tested and implemented across the continent, but no organisational structure to link them.

The aim of this event was to create a user network where managers of result-based schemes (and those who want to implement new schemes) can come together and exchange experiences on a regular basis. To facilitate this, the various existing result-based European payment systems were briefly presented at the conference. This was followed by an open discussion, which should also cover farmers' views and the transferability to other ecosystem services (water, soil and climate). Finally, the formation of a network for result-based payments was discussed.

An excursion to two farmers in Lower Austria and Styria, who participate in the result-based payment system, rounded off the two-day event.

More than 50 participants from 17 countries followed the invitation and ensured that an important first step has been taken to implement an international network for result-based payment systems.

If you would like to be informed regularly about the network's activities, please send a short e-mail to network@themanatur.at
